The Boom 2 should last for around 15 hours of continuous music playback, and typically takes three hours to recharge. Finally, UE has teased some 'interesting' over-the-air firmware updates in the future, indicating new features can be added as and when they are ready. You can turn the Boom 2 on and off from the app, without having to power it on using the button on the speaker itself, and you also get an EQ for customising the sound signature.

UE's free app returns, letting you pair two Boom speakers together (or any combination of Boom, MegaBoom and UE Roll speakers) into a stereo pair to double up on sound, with the correct speaker appearing as a visual indicator on your smartphone screen - even correctly matching the colour of the speakers. Finally, pressing both volume buttons at once will activate an audible battery life alert. Gesture controls have been added too, letting you tap the top of the speaker to start and stop playback, or double-tap to skip tracks. You can now move up to 30m away from the speaker and maintain a connection to your smartphone via Bluetooth. The internals have been completely redesigned, helping boost the total volume but also increasing the wireless range. That means you can do more than rinse it under a tap after a day at the beach - you could drop it in a bucket of water and the music will keep playing. This is primarily to allow for better customisation for special editions, but also helps make the Boom 2 IPX7 waterproof. It still has a tripod thread in the base, along with a clip for hooking onto a bag, but now the acoustic mesh is more tightly wrapped around the outer skin.

That means it will still slide into a bike bottle holder, and the rubber skin can absorb impacts from chest height. The UE Boom 2 builds on this design, changing very little on the outside.

Still, ignoring that, if you’re looking for one of the best waterproof Bluetooth speakers on the market today, it’s hard to do better than the UE Wonderboom – unless you count the Wonderboom 2, that is.Ultimate Ears has updated its incredibly popular UE Boom rugged bluetooth speaker, adding full waterproofing and an even louder sound for the UE Boom 2. The original UE Boom is consistently the second best selling Bluetooth speaker here in the UK and in the US, and it's clear to see why: with a stain- and water-resistant skin, cylindrical design and angled drivers for an enveloping sound, and plenty of colour choices, it's a fun speaker that won't crap out on you in the rain. In our eyes, the UE Wonderboom bests the Roll 2 in just about every way –except for the Roll 2’s handy bungee cord – and the existence of two like speakers will probably cause confusion. Problematically, however, Logitech is offering both the UE Roll 2 and UE Wonderboom at the same price without much of a difference between them. Adding all of these features up and it’s easy to see that the UE Wonderboom is an excellent waterproof speaker. The speaker sounds great, is fully waterproof, can pair to two devices simultaneously, can be paired to a second speaker, works with Siri or Google Assistant, and has a 100 feet wireless range. At $99 (£79.99, AU$129), the Wonderboom offers a ton of features and performance for its price. Where the UE Wonderboom really shines is in its value. Want the best balance of sound, battery life and waterproofing? The Fugoo Go costs the same but doesn’t sound nearly as balanced as the Wonderboom, lacking in bass depth and punch. The Color II sounds slightly better with vocals but isn’t fully waterproof, requires directional sound and last two hours less than the Wonderboom.

The JBL Charge 3 sounds better, but it’s also twice the size of the Wonderboom. For casual listening by (or in) the pool, the UE Wonderboom sounds excellent. That’s not to say the bass isn’t good on the UE Wonderboom, though. Bass-heads looking for a waterproof Bluetooth speaker should look no further than the JBL Charge 3. Highs sounded good as well, but were slightly uncontrolled at higher volumes, resulting in some sibilance.īass is also good, but not class-leading. Sound is warm, favoring mids and mid-bass. The UE Wonderboom sounds excellent and fixes the muddy bass from the UE Roll 2. The Roll 2 was easy to hang from things like a shower head, but you’ll need to bring your own carabiners and cords to mount the UE Wonderboom. This makes mounting the speaker on things more of a challenge, and in some small way, helps to separate the two speakers however slightly. Where the UE Roll 2 featured a hand bungee cord that wrapped around the speaker, the UE Wonderboom has a very short elastic loop. It would have been nice to see UE offer USB Type-C charging as most phones and laptops today now feature the new connection – but this isn’t what we’d consider a deal-breaker. The only port on the speaker is the microUSB charging port which is covered by a waterproof flap.
